Beth El's Social Action Outreach
Congregation Beth El has long and proudly devoted itself to social action concerns. While Jewish law and tradition demand it, we joyfully partner with our neighbors and collaborate relationships, advocate, educate and open our minds, hearts and hands to those around us. This mission is made possible by engaged and caring congregants, the support of our Board of Directors, our active Hebrew School and the guidance of our Rabbi. Easing hunger and homelessness, in particular, are challenging pursuits we embrace as a congregation. We invite you to join our caring community as we strive to make life a little easier for those less fortunate.
Beth El’s new Social Action Outreach is dedicated to involving our congregants in the work of Tikkun Olam, repairing the world.
In addition to the popular monthly Cook for a Friend program, there are several new events happening in 2019-2020. The Committee’s focus for this year is to “fill in the gaps” as we work with several neighborhood aid organizations. This means helping to provide goods that the organizations fall short in providing during the year.
Look what we have accomplished this year:
Due to COVID-19 our social action plans are on hold for the remainder of the year.
Collecting items for Levittown Homeless Shelter
Collection begins now through December 15, 2019. Boxes will be available for collecting new and gently used kids' winder clothing for Cradles to Crayons in Philly. The disadvantaged children they serve need kids' clothes: infant to age 12, kids' coats, jackets sweaters and new kids' PJs, socks and underwear.
Sunday, December 15: Menorah Building Lego Community Event open to all. Bring a non-perishable food item for donation to the Levittown Homeless Shelter. Look for further information about this event, including specific food items needed, later this fall.
Ongoing Social Action Outreach programs include:
- Cook for a Friend: Monthly preparation of over 100 kosher meals delivered to the JCC Klein Branch in Northeast Philadelphia for home bound elderly. For more information, check your weekly emails and our website.
- I Support the Girls (http://isupportthegirls.org), sponsored by Women of Beth El, collects new and gently used bras, and individually sealed tampons and maxi pads, for distribution to women and girls nationally and internationally. A donation box is in the main lobby. Questions? Contact Lenora Perlmutter at 215-321-7044.
- “Heart and Sole” Campaign: Recycle your “gently used” shoes and help build Israel’s largest high-tech cardiac center. Karen Shoemaker and Lou Balcher are working with American Friends of Kaplan Medical Center to make this happen. A shoe donation box is in the main lobby. Contact Lou Balcher at firstname.lastname@example.org or 215-932-2074 for more information.
The Social Action Outreach Committee welcomes your help, as a committee member or a participant in any of our programs. For more information about how you can become involved, contact Diane Axelrod at socialaction@BethElYardley.org.
