On Saturday evening, January 19th and Sunday morning January 20th, we kicked off ayear long project of writing a new Sefer Torah. Participants of all ages were engaged in study as they explored a variety of topics related to the giving of Torah and the actual creation of a Sefer Torah. Our Sefer Torah is being written by Rabbi Alan Scwartz a Sofer (scribe) from The Jerusalem Scribe in Israel, who grew up at Beth El. Rabbi Akiba Garber, director of The Jerusalem Scribe, who also grew up at Beth El, visited the congregation for our special kickoff weekend. Pictured left is Rabbi Akiva Garber with Rabbi Pivo holding the finished version of our new Torah's Book of B'reisheet (Genesis).
There are many opportunities to take part in our Community Sefer Torah Project. You can sponsor a special Hebrew verse, Torah Portion, name, word...

On Sunday, March 30, 2008, Rabbi Garber returned to Beth El to teach us how a sofer makes a Torah. Each participant had the opportunity to lean and practice Hebrew Torah calligraphy with calligraphy nibs, as well as with real quills. It was an event enjoyed by all! We are looking forward to our Sefer Torah Siyyum on Sunday, September 14th when Rabbi Garber and our Sofer, Rabbi Schwartz will complete our new Sefer Torah along with those who made contributions to it.
